My work is a diatribe on the social behavior of people – how one class of people within a society taunt, criticize and look down their nose to another class of people. Sometimes it is done openly, sometime subtly and at times it is behind their backs. Regardless of who is taunting and who bears the brunt of the joke, this social habit results into a lot of negative energy and conflicts amongst various elements of society, a sad result of which is individuals losing their self-esteem and starting to underestimate themselves. And these dynamics become even more complex when one class is oblivious behind a Burqa (برقع). Although a loose piece of fabric, the notion of burqa symbolizes rigidity of a patriarchal society where women are forced to follow the whims of their male masters. Finding a solution will be over-simplification, but I think that education can be one deal breaker. The use of calligraphy in my work is a gentle reminder; a visual cue to find a middle and peaceful ground through enlightenment gained from knowledge. On the softer side of this whole debate, the burqa itself becomes a conversational piece and its whys and hows disappear among the social chatter. People are often intimidated by what they have no knowledge of, and the burqa is a piece of clothing which should not warrant fearful reaction. Underneath the burqa is a person simply trying to practise their religion. It is interesting to note that other forms of dress and appearance are no longer considered intimidating, as they have become accepted by the wider community. I think that women should not care about what people think but do focus on this; “They shouldn’t have to defend what they wear to anyone. The burqa is part of their religion, and the fact that they choose to wear it does not make them any less human.” Without getting into the gender politics, one will not miss out an opportunity to make a social comment, be it for fashion or otherwise"فیشن الٹا پہنو تو صحیح ہے، سیدھا ہو تو غلط "۔ No automatic alt text available.
